Plant Survival – Grow money on trees.

Mar 13, 2022 - Category : How to guide

From nurseries, garden retailers, forestry companies, landscapers and councils – ours is an industry striving 24/7 to keep pace with demand and stock availability, while juggling disruption (think pandemic). Yet the supply-demand equation has not let up and the topic of plant survival feels so important.

Of course, we can talk about expanding production too (automation all the way)… but for this article, our focus is on avoiding plant loss.

Success stories in this industry usually come from rigorous solutions for wind protection, irrigation, soil nutrition, pest control and weed suppression. But always, we remind customers that plants are our business and we are here to help! Those doing it well might recognise our quick-fire tips and favourite products outlined below:

WIND:
Strong wind events can lead to devastating plant damage. We have seen many innovative solutions reach the market, aimed at providing a microclimate to support both roots and overall plant. TIP! A few high-performers include bamboo cane stakes, premium shade cloths, and we have fantastic stock levels available.

WATER:
From retention, to adequate supply through to irrigation in every guise; surface, sprinkler and drip – it’s no surprise that water rules! Our wool matting is sustainable, suppresses weeds, insulates and does an excellent job of retaining water. It’s also very easy to apply. TIP! Are your irrigation systems automated and fit for purpose? Let us help.

SOIL FERTILITY:
Achieving the correct soil fertility is critical for optimal plant growth. Maintaining that nutrient balance is super important too. One of our favourite products is Smartgro Fertiliser Tablets for orchards, forestry, vineyards and nurseries. Each 10g tablet provides a perfectly controlled release of Nitrogen, Phosphorous, Potassium, Magnesium and trace elements. It’s unique slow release (up to 3 years) makes it great for poor soil conditions. Along with promoting faster growth, it also reduces labour costs as just one application is required – win/win! TIP! Good discounts are available for 10+ boxes.

PESTS:
From rodents, rabbits, possum and stoats – pest control can hinder production and require immediate control. TIP! Pindone have manufactured some very effective repellents, and we would be happy to discuss a suitable solution for you.

WEEDS:
Despite suppression and sprays, weeds have a shameless way of returning! In an age where glyphosate is a bad word, we have continued to explore more sustainable products. One of our new favourites is an organic weedkiller called WeedEnz Rapid. Completely biodegradable, this product leaves no residue in the soil. Alternatively, if you do require something strong (no judgement here), we have plenty of clean-up stock available.
