Nestled in the Waikato region is an iconic tourist attraction. This stunning sheep farm, framed by the majestic Kaimai Ranges, has recently added a state-of-the-art propagation greenhouse and plant hardening-off facility to help bring its vision to life.
This is no ordinary place. Every morning before visitors arrive, the grounds must be immaculate, because every detail is on full display. From sweeping landscapes to tables adorned with miniature edibles, and vases brimming with rare flowers and medicinal herbs, the setting is designed to immerse its visitors in a fantasy world.
Unlike traditional horticulture, the team here are doing more than growing plants – they are cultivating an experience. The goal is to recreate a fantasy atmosphere, as if the well-known characters might be seen tending veggies, herbs, and crops grown right here, amidst meadows, gardens, and woodlands.
As with the carefully crafted landmarks on set, every plant must be authentic, often requiring a remarkable variety of species to enrich the storytelling. One standout example is the medicinal garden, where all plants support the theme of healing. With some 40 unique scenes to bring to life, the demand for healthy, diverse plant stock is constant.
In 2024, the Nursery Manager approached our team with an ambitious vision to grow their own plant stock inhouse and be self-sufficient. In time, this would reduce reliance on costly, unreliable external suppliers for rare plants, enhance quality control, and boost overall productivity.
We have supplied general nursery supplies for this customer’s plant nursery for several years, so it was exciting to deliver a purpose-built greenhouse to significantly expand their propagation efforts. This new facility not only nurtures their own plant stock but also supports the development of an exclusive VIP tour, offering visitors a fascinating backstage glimpse into the world of storytelling.
With this new greenhouse facility, they have taken stronger control of their propagation process, growing a diverse range of plants that are crucial to maintaining the authenticity of the film’s scenes. From rare medicinal herbs to unique edible varieties – they are now self-sufficient and able to meet the demanding standards of the attraction. It’s not just about growing plants — it’s about nurturing the living backdrop that brings the story to life for every visitor.
Advanced Techology
The greenhouse spans 6 x 15m and boasts advanced technology for its size. Divided into two zones by a steel-framed, polycarbonate-clad internal partition, it allows flexible, intensive cultivation. For example, one zone grows flowers and shrubs, while the other simultaneously nurtures edibles and leafy greens.
The entire structure is covered with durable polycarbonate cladding featuring an anti-drip treatment. The gable ends are 8mm twin-wall polycarbonate sheets, and the sides have two automatic rollup plastic vents for each zone. A net has been installed on these openings to protect the plants from insects and birds. Pole supports secure the automatic plastic film vents, stabilising them from strong winds.
Climate Control
Energy-efficient, automated thermal and shading screens operate in each zone under the control of temperature sensors and a weather station. These measure room temperature, wind speed and direction, and rain presence – one set per zone. A pulley system activates the screens when light levels increase, as detected by Lux sensors. This setup allows independent, precise climate control tailored to each zone’s needs.
The climate system can function automatically or be operated manually, ensuring a consistently stable environment – vital for the health and uniform growth of the plants.
Roll-Top Ebb & Flow Benches
Inside, several roll-top benches hold plants in pots or trays. Made from lightweight, corrosion-resistant aluminium, the benches include UV-stabilised ribbed plastic insert trays for durability. Their rolling tops slide left and right, enabling workers easy access between the benches, maximising working space and improving operational efficiency.
From cutting-edge technology to imaginative storytelling, this greenhouse is proof that growing plants can also mean growing experiences.
