We recently volunteered at Ronald McDonald House Charities (RMHC). Our team had a fantastic evening rolling up their sleeves to prep, cook and serve meals to families staying at the house. The experience was deeply humbling and it was a privilege to join a charity doing such incredible work.
Heartfelt Evening.
On the menu was a hearty winter’s meal – but the experience was much more than food. It was a reality check greeting families after a long day in the hospital. Normal life grinds to a halt when a family cares for a hospitalised child and it’s a journey no one should face alone.
As we rolled up our aprons and left for the evening, it felt unfair to those families who were navigating such a challenging time. We send our warmest wishes to all of the parents and guardians we met and we’re hoping for a speedy and positive outcome for every child.
Facing Growing Challenges.
RMHC New Zealand is led by Chief Executive Wayne Howett who reported helping a record 4,452 families in 2023. Not a single eligible family was turned away – a promise that has been kept since the charity began 37 years ago. All walks of life are united by the experience of caring for an unwell child, and the charity is a safe haven in a storm of illness.
We were grateful to play a very humble part in their mission, but RMHC is concerned it will be unable to keep its promise if the numbers continue to soar. It’s a sobering reminder (and a gentle nudge) to help out where you can.
