Minginui Nursery recently celebrated the completion of a greenhouse, which aligns perfectly with their vision – Growing Trees, Growing People & Growing Iwi.
Surrounded by the pre-historic Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park, the Minginui Nursery was formed from the unique relationship between the forest, Ngāti Whare and Scion – unifying nature, Māori and science.
As part of the settlement between Ngāti Whare and the Crown, a key role of the nursery is to regenerate 640 hectares of surrounding pine plantation to native.
As a purely native tree nursery specialising in revegetation plants, most plants have been propagated from seeds sourced from the Whirinaki Te Pua-a-Tāne Conservation Park but they also have the capability to eco-source from other regions. All plants are carefully nurtured in a series of poly-houses, before being hardened in the tough open Minginui environment.
With the capacity to grow over 1,000,000 plants per year the Minginui Nursery is able to supply natives on a commercial scale.
Greenhouse Brief
In partnership with Scion, Minginui Nursery turned to PrimeHort for the design and delivery of a multi-span greenhouse for propagation. The nursery has been ordering their consumables from PrimeHort since 2019. As their operations scaled-up, they required a smart facility to host their own seed collection and germination.
The site for the greenhouse was straightforward, flat and well-prepared for our installation team to hit the ground running once the building consent was granted. The greenhouse structure has a key role of providing shade and shelter, and consists of three bays (totalling 2,420sqm).
PrimeHort also supplied galvanised steel fixed benching at ergonomical hip height for a comfortable work environment.
A basic irrigation system (with a Hunter Controller) allows for cost-efficient, uniform watering of the seedlings and completes the picture of a well-considered project, set to grow with the team.
Client Comment
“We enjoy working with Joel and the team at PrimeHort, they came up with a very relevant and sustainable greenhouse solution to see us into the future. The installation went smoothly and we can see a return on investment being achieved very quickly.” Earl Rewi.
