The core function of a plant guard is ‘project Insurance’. Whether you’re planting hundreds of natives for a restoration project or landscaping a commercial development, every seedling represents an investment of time, labour and money.
The right plant guard is one of the cheapest forms of insurance you can buy.
A quality guard protects young plants from pests, herbicide spray drift, harsh winds and frosts. It also creates a sheltered microclimate that accelerates early growth. If you consider the cost of replacing failed plants, guards often pay for themselves many times over.
In this guide, we explain the different types of guards available, when to use each one, and how to choose the right solution for your project.
Why use a plant guard?
- Protection against rabbits, hares, possums and livestock
- Reduce wind stress while plants establish
- Trap warmth during cold winter nights
- Improve humidity around young plants
- Protect plants from chemical spray drift
- Reduce maintenance and replacement costs
- Increase survival rates and establishment success
Many restoration and forestry projects report significantly higher establishment rates when quality tree guards are used, particularly on exposed sites. Tree guards are also known to increase survival rates of young trees by up to 34 percent.
Save time with our Smartgro Plant Guard Kitsets
Recently, we launched Smartgro Plant Guard Kitsets and they are proving very popular. Rather than ordering every component separately, our Plant Guard Kitsets include everything needed for efficient installation:
- Plant Guard (choice of Corflute or Biodegradable)
- Matching Bamboo Stake including 50 spares
- Wool Square pre-slit for easy installation
Available in convenient packs of 200, they’re ideal for landscapers, councils, and contractors managing larger planting projects.
Benefits include:
- Faster ordering with one product code
- No forgotten components
- Each component matched for compatibility
- Easier budgeting and project planning
- Less packaging and handling
For busy landscapers, it’s a simple way to get planting underway without spending time matching individual products.
Why do tree guards improve survival?
Guards create a sheltered microclimate by:
- Reducing wind exposure
- Slowing moisture loss
- Protecting new shoots
- Increasing daytime temperatures around seedlings
- Reducing transplant shock
During winter, this small increase in temperature can help reduce frost damage on susceptible species.
Choosing the right height
Height is important, as a general guide:
- Lower guards suit smaller shrubs in low-risk areas.
- Taller guards provide greater protection against rabbits, possums and spray drift.
- Exposed sites generally benefit from taller guards that provide more shelter during establishment.
Selecting the correct height should match both the growth habit of the plant and the risks present on site.

PROJECT SPOTLIGHT:
Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society (MHRS)
Our plant guards are used across restoration projects throughout NZ, helping protect young native trees during their most vulnerable establishment phase. But this project is particularly close to our hearts.
We have helped Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society (MHRS) a couple of times now, rolling up our sleeves for a cause that resonates with us. The Mangawhai Harbour Restoration Society is a well-respected organisation that revitalises and preserves our precious local harbour.
We donated 640 native plants and enjoyed an afternoon away from our desks to voluntary plant them into the landscape that hugs the Mangawhai Sandspit. Our plant guards and bamboo stakes (plus our Smartgro slow release fertiliser tablets) have played a key role in in this process.
Why choose our plant guards?
Not all tree guards are created equal.
Our range has been carefully selected for NZ growing conditions, with options suited to restoration projects, commercial landscaping, councils, farmers, lifestyle blocks, alpine and coastal environments and more.
Key benefits include:
- UV stabilised materials for long service life
- Proven designs used throughout NZ
- Excellent ventilation where required
- Easy installation
- Multiple sizes to suit different species
- Compatible with our range of stakes, weedmats, ground covers and fasteners
- Complete Smartgro kitsets available for faster installation
Frequently Asked Questions
To help with your decision-making, we’ve gathered the questions our team is most commonly asked about plant guards.
Do tree guards protect against frost?
Yes. Tree guards help create a warmer microclimate around young plants by trapping ground heat and reducing exposure to cold winds. They won’t prevent damage during extreme frosts, but they can improve winter establishment.
Do tree guards stop rabbits?
Yes. Corflute tree guards provide excellent protection against rabbits and hares while plants are becoming established.
Should I remove tree guards?
Corflute guards are typically removed once plants are well established, although timing depends on the plant species and site conditions. Biodegradable guards naturally break down over time, eliminating the need for collection.
Are biodegradable guards strong enough?
Yes. They provide reliable protection during the critical establishment period while naturally degrading over approximately 12 months. Environmental conditions, such as heavy snow loading, should be considered when selecting them.
Which guard is best for restoration planting?
Biodegradable guards are often preferred for remote restoration projects where returning to collect guards is difficult or costly. Corflute guards remain the preferred choice where maximum durability and long-term protection are required.
Do I need a weedmat or ground cover as well?
Yes, where practical. Weedmats and ground covers, including wool, jute, coir matting and wool mat squares, reduce weed competition, retain soil moisture and improve plant establishment. Combining a guard with a weedmat gives seedlings the best possible start.
What are the most common mistakes when choosing tree guards?
- Buying guards that are too short.
- Choosing biodegradable guards where long-term protection is needed.
- Using undersized stakes.
- Forgetting to install weedmats.
- Ordering components separately and delaying installation.
- Not considering spray drift where herbicides will be used nearby.
Every planting project is different, but choosing the right protection at the beginning can significantly improve survival rates and reduce costly replacements.
