Eco-friendly Potting Mix… just add water!

Feb 23, 2024 - Category : Growing Media

Coconut coir (known as coco fibre) is derived from coconut husks and is a natural and renewable resource with several wonderful advantages as a growing media over traditional potting mixes.

By choosing The Gardener Coco Fibre Blocks gardeners are making an environmentally conscious decision for a greener, more sustainable gardening experience. Coco fibre also reduces the dependency on peat moss (the main ingredient in potting mix) which has often been harvested from fragile ecosystems.

Best still, coco fibre is suitable for use in most planting situations, from indoor pot plants, flowers, outdoor container gardens, planting young trees, and using it as a top layer to improve the soil quality across the garden.

Here are a few more advantages of using The Gardener Coco Fibre Blocks:

  • Water Retention – coco fibre has an excellent ability to hold water while still providing good aeration. This helps prevent the overwatering and underwatering of plants while promoting healthier root development.
  • Aeration – the fibrous structure of coco coir allows for adequate aeration in the root zone. This prevents soil compaction and promotes oxygen availability to the roots, which is essential for plant growth.
  • pH Neutral – unlike traditional potting mixes, coconut coir is pH neutral. This means it won’t significantly alter the acidity or alkalinity of the soil, providing a stable environment for plants.
  • Resists Fungal Growth – Coconut coir has natural antifungal properties, reducing the likelihood of soil-borne diseases. This can contribute to healthier plants and prevent issues like root rot.
  • Lightweight & Convenient – Coco Fibre Blocks are lightweight compared to big heavy potting mix bags and are easier to lift and pack into the car.
  • Longevity – Coir has a slow decomposition rate, meaning it lasts longer than some organic materials used in traditional potting mixes. This reduces the frequency of repotting and provides stability to the growing medium over time.
  • Reduced Environmental Impact – As a by-product, coconut coir helps utilise waste from the coconut industry. By choosing coco coir, you contribute to reducing the environmental impact associated with other soil alternatives. You’re also saying goodbye to large potting mix plastic bags.
  • Simple to Use!

Using our Coco Fibre Blocks is a breeze! Just add water and watch it expand to a light and well-aerated soil. Mix in Smart Grow slow-release fertiliser as per directions on the bottle. For the 650g option, one block yields about 9 litres. And for 5kg you can expect about 70 litres.

Experience the joy of bountiful blooms and harvests with the help of The Gardener Coco Fibre Blocks.
